Yes I really think this should be done. Agpifoj is more stable and has
more features than the core version.
I would help to integrate the code.
Here is a possible agenda:
1. Start with the code of the Agpifoj-Plugin.
2. Add all features of Geoimage that are not in Agpifoj. (Not many...)
This includes:
(a) Display thumbnails on the map
(b) Make it load from gpx-layer context menu.
(c) Make previous / next - button disabled when first / last image
is reached
(d) Display a large detached image dialog by default if the user
clicks on a map thumbnail. I Suppose this is better for beginners
whereas experienced users can open the docked window using the toggle
button. Then a click on the map would open the image in the docked
window instead.
(e) Caching. I would drop this (or make it optional) since it seems
to do more harm than good. (see #2937 for example)
3. Simplify some things:
(a) Altitude and speed display on top of the image could be
optional (disabled by default or moved to the status bar)
(b) Simplify the main dialog when loading images. Maybe add a
"advanced" tab to put the stuff that isn't uses so often.
(c) ...
4. Improve!
I just summarize, what comes to my mind right now.
(a) Make thumbnails optional. It takes some time till they are
loaded and some people may not have much use for them.
(b) Increase/Decrease the Thumbnail image size depending on the
zoom level of the map.
(c) make the toggle button disabled or disappear if no geoimage
layer is present
(d) remember last synchronisation offset value for different
cameras: If you take photos with different cameras it is inconvinient
that always the last offset is put as default value. Instead the last
known offset for this particular camera should be used. The camera model
and manufacturer could be read easily from EXIF data.
(e) remember synchronization offset for each set of photos
(f) Improve "center on map": Only change the view if the next
thumbnail would not be visible. Currently all this jumping back and
forth is somewhat irritating.
(g) "Remove photo from Layer" is nice but "Remove image file from
disk" would be useful as well.
(h) "Write gps data to file" (see
<http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/josm-dev/2009-August/003300.html>)
(i) Cache Thumbnails on disk. (Similar to what nautilus/gnome does.)
(j) Preload images
(k) Offer rotation for images (clockwise / counterclockwise)
(l) possibility to skim through the images.
Only enlarged thumbnails are displayed when this mode is active.
Don't know how useful this would be.
(m) Ticket #2461 "Show other icon if multiple images are on one
track point"
(n) Ticket #2375 "Multiple images on the same GPX point get lost"
@ Ævar: Could you please be a bit more specific, so we take these common
use cases into account?
