People keep suggesting it, and I even half implemented it once, but
without any bounding box restriction.
What I keep coming back to though is, what exactly is the point? What
is anybody going to do with a list of several hundred random strings
that people have entered as their display names? It's entirely devoid
of any useful meaning.
Obviously imported data sets are a special case, but in general I think
the preferred solution should be some way in which the attribution can
be to the project rather than hundreds or thousands of individuals.
That way the attribution for any given area is much more sensible
and has some meaning - so "OpenStreetMap, AND" for NL, "OpenStreetMap,
Geobase" for CA etc.
On top of all which of course, it won't actually be accurate for the
reasons I gave in my reply to Mikel.
