[OSM-newbies] password problems

Hi,

I have just downloaded JOSM and am just getting started, but seem to
have run into a wall.

I have installed everything correctly and am trying to download data.
I have used the "Choose an area" map and have used bookmarks from the
Slipy map, but I always get a password error.

I have read through everything I could find but to no avail. I know
the username is supposed to be the email that I have at the OSM wiki
(right?). I am logged in to the wiki, looking at my preferences and
copy/paste that email to the JOSM dialog, adding the password, but
still I get no joy.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am new to JOSM, but not new to
computers or GPS/GPX or even OSM.
