[OSM-newbies] delete a segment from a way

I made a way of four segments. I noticed that it was not really closed.
The only way to close it is to delete the last segment and draw a new
one. When I do this it seems as if the way then no longer exists
and I have to select all the segments again to form the way.
Is that what's happening?
