[OSM-newbies] Coasts lines and river banks

I’m new here, I intend to mostly deal with rivers and navigable canals. 

 

One practical question I have is how you import coast lines. The reason is
that when I look at the Ukraine section (I am a Kiev resident, at the
moment). Rivers and lakes are absolutely missing, while towns and villages
are present, which leads me to think that must have been imported from some
general PD map (they are all different in shape and seem to correspond to
usual mapping, I can hardly think of people drawing them as single entities,
since there are little users from the Ukraine). The river banks here are
often as complicated as the Biesbosch in the Netherlands, as they rather
degrade into marshes than originate a well formed bank. 

 

My idea was to make some first experiments here, in a scarcely populated
area of the global map.
