[OSM-newbies] data files

hi,

i'm still getting acquainted with openstreetmap but i'm wondering what 
sort of data files i can map.  i have a couple shp.xml file (found on a 
library site) as well as esri taken xml files.  can i map these with josm?

apologies if this question makes no sense. . .
