[OSM-newbies] splitting ways

Hi,

One of the things that I am doing on OSM is to fill in detail around the
area I live, to
do this I am finding myself 'splitting ways' a great deal.

Is there a better tool for doing this than JOSM ? I find that when I
recombine the way's
I often lose the original tags so that I need to re-enter them
