I've just started mapping and wondered is there any way to describe private roads?
I've two current examples:
---
a) Hursley Park Road (still called FIXME in the rendered maps but named today) at
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.02502&lon=-1.40022&zoom=17&layers=B0F
On the ground this looks like a proper road (new dark tarmac, white line etc) but there is a small sign saying it's a private road.
About half way round there are two more (unmapped) private roads going west, these look a little more private but I'd still class them as roads.
b)Chilling Lane
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=50.83899&lon=-1.27661&zoom=15&layers=B0F
This looks on the ground like a small road (cars have to slow down to pass) but is only marked as a cycle way / permissive footpath.
I drove down it and then west along what we've got marked as the Solent Way footpath before I realised it might be a private road.
It was dark and I didn't see any signs until I was welcomed to Solent Breezes caravan site.
---
Is there any recognised way to tag these roads? Even if they are private they could be used for access and should be mapped as some type of road but we don't want route finding systems (manual or automatic) to use them without warning the user.
Possibly car=private?
On a related note has anyone got a key to the mapnik tiles? It would be nice to make it available so people know what the differences between blue, red, yellow and green dotted lines are without having to read the XML files.
