[OSM-newbies] How to join ways and start new ones with the new JOSM?

In Preferences/Toolbar you can add "Split Way" and "Combine Way" They should 
solve your problems

I just started, so I don't know the old version.

I found two ways, either the "Split way" from above, or if you want to 
connect an old and a new node always go from the old one to the new one. 
AFAIK the direction is not important exept for one way streets.
