Also, note that you shouldn't just use the select tool to select a  
big rectangle of stuff, and then apply tags. Doing this will apply  
the tags to the nodes as well. You can use the select tool to select  
a bunch of ways and nodes, then use the "Current Selection" panel to  
only select the ways. In the panel, select the ways from the list  
(click on the first way, shift click on the last way) then click on  
the "Select" button underneath.
