Rick,  I can seem to replicate this.  I've found no problems witrh the split 
way tool.  Are you sure you dont have two ways on the affected node (one way 
underneath the other).  If you have a three button mouse, the middle click 
over the node, and it will bring up a dialog listing the ways on theta node.
