[OSM-newbies] Potlatch tags act across all ways with same tag?!

Dear all,

I am trying to add a tag name:en to different ways (different street names).
However, when I add name:en to one way, all the others that have that tag
receive the same street name. Any idea why? Also, it seems like when I have
entered name:en in JOSM, it comes out as name|en in Potlatch. Why is that?
