[OSM-newbies] What do I need

Hi,

I have a Garmin GPS12. So I need a cable to download the data to my PC. To 
do this I'll need software, which? I found a list of some programs:
EasyGPS, G7ToWin, Waypoint+ PCX5,Garmin Trip & Waypoint 
Manager,SoftTraxx,GPS - Track - Analyse,...
Then I need one of the OpenStreetmap Editors like Josm,Potlatch Merkaartor

Is any of the download software compatible with any of the editors? Can 
sombody suggest a good combination?
