When honeymooning in Crete a few years ago, there were at least
three different translations to English for one of the places we
visited, and if I hadn't started to recognise the Greek spelling on
the road signs we'd never have found it. 

So it isn't always as simple as picking "the" English spelling that
is used on the ground.
