What I'm using is pretty extreme overkill for this purpose (Olympus LS-10),
but I have some comments on synchronization. In short, I don't worry about
it. I leave the recorder in rec-pause, and when I enter a waypoint into my
GPS I speak the auto-generated waypoint number into the recorder and then make
the audio notes. At home I extract a GPX file with both tracks and waypoints,
load that into JOSM, listen to the recording, and work on the areas near the
waypoint numbers described in the recording.
Actually, I've only used this process once, but it worked surprisingly well and
I intend to continue doing so.
