as root, try
rmmod garmin_gps

Maybe it also helps to use a more recent release of gpsbabel. The HCx range of 
devices are pretty new still. If this does not help, post the output of the 
following command on the gpsbabel mailing list, if possible:

gpsbabel -D9 -i garmin -f usb: -o gpx -F blah.gpx
