[OSM-newbies] tagging large islands

If I add place=island to a spot on a small (but not tiny) island the text seems to appear at roughly the right zoom size.  But when I want to do it for a large island (visible on the world map) it won't do so.  Similarly for really tiny islands, putting in their names crowds the map.

Is there any way to define which zoom levels (or relative sizes) islands have?
