Hi Dirk,

I believe the reason that when you copy a URL into
JOSM from the map page, the rectangle is smaller is
because it assumes a smaller screen resolution/browser
window size than I always use. It is hard to think of
a way round this, but I think that JOSM should assume
a higher screen resolution than it currently does.

The square is the area within which you can be sure
all data has been downloaded. If a way is part in the
square, and part outside, it gets downloaded. This is
the cause of ways extending outside the square.
Remember that other ways and nodes outside the square
will not have been downloaded, so avoid editing ways
outside the square if other ways could be connected to
them, for example - you don't know how it will affect
the other data. Working within the square is safe.

If you want to define the area in JOSM, you can either
use the slippy map download plugin (i can't remember
the exact name, but it's different from the slippy map
plugin) or you can use other data (eg a GPX track you
have opened in JOSM rather than downloaded) to zoom to
the area you want to work on, then click download.
JOSM defaults to downloading the area currently
visible in JOSM.

Regards,

David
