I used a similarly-aged eTrex for many years. It's not much good for  
city centre mapping, but it's fine out in the countryside, for long A  
roads or for cycle trips. They have a 1536-point tracklog memory,  
which will cope with a day or two's driving/cycling.

The 71 points and the lack of timestamps really does sound like you  
"saved" the track on the eTrex. If you don't do this then you should  
be able to get decent results from it.

(That said, the current HCx eTrexes are lovely if you feel like upgrading...)
