[OSM-newbies] exporting vector data

Hi Folks.

For an academic project, I need a computer-readable streetmap of the 
Town of Braunschweig, Germany, to do some traffic simulation (with SUMO) 
within.
I did't find anything about this topic, so I dare to ask here:
Is there a way to export a part of the map data into some well known 
format (shapefile, TIGER, ...)?
