[OSM-newbies] Extracting osm using osmxapi

I've been trying to extract a bite size piece of Kentucky using curl and 
osmxapi without much success, so wonder if there are better ways to do it. 

Trying for tiny bites didn't seem to make any difference. The best I did 
was using separate node/way/relation that downloaded the nodes but crapped 
out on the rest using a 1 degree box. The node file size was 1.25Gb and 
took 13 hours. 

Mostly I'ved tried 0.5 degree boxes and mostly it sits there having 
received 38 bytes and does nothing for hours on end!
