[OSM-newbies] Foreign language rendering

To the collective wisdom,

I am an English speaker mapping here in South Korea.

Just recently I started adding some Hangul (the Korean alphabet) to some
streets and places when I get a chance. I am using this format for the
moment: <Name= 자양로 (Jayangno) > .

Yes, I know that I should probably be adding the English under a separate
key (and I guess I or someone else eventually will), but for people not
familiar with a non-roman script, puzzling out the pronunciation of Korean
names can be rather difficult. So I thought having the Romanized script
(when it does exist on signs) in the main 'name' tag would give people a leg
up.

Of course, eventually, when we all speak
*Esperanto*<http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/75/Esperanto.ogg>we
won't have to worry about this anymore.

But my question ... Mapnik does render the Hangul. It is barely legible, but
it is there. However, Osmarender doesn't seem to display the Korean script.
Is this a fault of my tagging, or is Osmarender not capable of dealing with
Asian character sets yet?

I just noticed it appears to be the same over Japan and China (And that
places in Japan are often named with the English in parentheses like I am
doing in Korea :-)

Is there a timetable for supporting Korean and other Asian languages in
Osmarender?

Thanks for the comments

Robert
