I've had to do this occasionally and the way I do it now is to
select the two nodes where I want to cut (by clicking on the first
and I think shift-clicking on the second, though do it without
thinking now so am not sure) and pressing P (again if I remember
correctly) to cut the way into three. I then click on the middle
section to select it. Oh - this in JOSM.
