[OSM-newbies] How do you permanently delete stuff in JOSM (stop it being saved as history?)

Hi

I've been experimenting with JOSM and Kosmos today. I've been editing an osm
file, saving it as an osm file on my computer, then trying to display it
using Kosmos so I can create an image then print it out.

But when I use Kosmos to open an osm file created with JOSM, I see all the
deleted stuff. I open the same osm file with JOSM and the deleted stuff isnt
there!
It appears that JOSM didnt actualy delete, but moves the deletions to a
history? Kosmos opens the whole lot and displays it.

I have no reason to save stuff I wanted deleted, so can any one tell me if
ths is what is actually happening, and importantly how do can actually
delete stuff in JOSM. (A second solution would be to have Kosmos not display
this deleted information, but I'd rather not have it in the first place)

thanks

Jason
