Did you click on the little padlock icon in the lower left of the
screen to unlock the ways? If you leave the ways in the red locked
position, they will not be entered into the database.
It sounds like you've done things correctly up to that point, but you
never mentioned unlocking the ways. The GPS tracks you are imported
show up as locked ways when you hit the track button so that you will
be the only person working on them at that time. Once you unlock them,
they become visible to anyone else working in the area, and they can
start mucking with them as well. It can get a bit confusing if two
people are editing the same way at the same time.
You are correct in that it will take a Wednesday evening before the
new information will show up in the main screen. When you are looking
for the data you were editing, do you just look at the main map view,
or do you go into the edit page as well? If your information is in the
database, it will always show up in the edit page, even if it is
tagged wrong, or what have you. It may not get rendered because of bad
tags, or possibly because the render request for that area got missed,
but it will always be in the database, and can be seen on the edit
page.
Try going into the area of concern, and import a GPS track, edit it to
show what you would like, and make sure you unlock it. Go back to the
view page, and then go back into the edit page. If you have done
things properly, the way you just added will show up on the edit page.
If the newly added way does not show up when you go back to edit mode,
you're missing a step somewhere... Give it a shot, and tell us what
you find. Potlatch is pretty easy to use, and you can play around
without hurting things. Add a random way, then delete it... no one
will complain if you're trying to learn.
