When I had a look yesterday it seems the nodes were joined in the
wrong order on the way, so instead of following the GPS trace
(visible in Potlatch if you press G) it was leaping backwards and
forwards.
A few of the many nodes had a few additional tags which I believed
reflected a path marker/post/waypoint - whatever you want to call it
(though waypoint is a bit confusing as it is also used in GPX files
to mean something specific), and I am guessing reflect the
information on that post.
I was in Practice mode in Potlatch and think it would be quickest to
delete the whole section of the path where it has gone wrong and
then add the information back onto existing nodes at the appropriate
locations. I did try snipping the way into sections and just
deleting the strange sections, but that was very time consuming.
Another thought was to make a note of the relatively few node ids
with additional tags, delete the way (which I'm guessing deletes the
nodes), then revert those nodes to bring them back and redraw the
path linking to those existing nodes as appropriate.
But what caused it in the first place I couldn't be sure.
