Aah, I'm a little surprised, the area seemed much more recently built
when I lived in Sylmar.

I keep forgetting about the Californian propensity to live in poorly
designed communities.

IIRC, the streets don't end at the Pacific Ocean in Venice, most
terminate against Ocean Front Walk, a cycleway. Coincidentally, one I
wouldn't touch with a 60 foot pole because the police seem more
concerned with perfecting their tans than they are with enforcing a safe
flow of traffic on Ocean Front Walk (pedestrians routinely ignore the
through lanes, walking down the middle of the street, cyclists often
ride in the oncoming lanes illegally, all while the local police smoke
cigarettes and stare blankly at the sun...)
