[OSM-newbies] Garmin IMG files / mkgmap (was "Conversational gambit: New to OSM?")

I'm not familiar with shp2osm - any chance of posting a small resulting 
.osm file?

Presumably you get some preamble, some nodes, and then a series of ways 
looking a bit like this:

   <way id="37640003" visible="true" timestamp="2009-07-13T17:45:55Z" 
version="1" changeset="1818828" user="SomeoneElse" uid="61942">
     <nd ref="441261390"/>
     <nd ref="441261391"/>
     <nd ref="441261380"/>
     <tag k="surface" v="gravel"/>
     <tag k="created_by" v="Potlatch 0.10f"/>
     <tag k="highway" v="footway"/>
     <tag k="foot" v="yes"/>
   </way>

but with the tags that are defined by trails-rules-long.txt, followed by 
"</osm>" at the end?

If you can make a resulting .osm available I can have a go at loading it 
into mkgmap here and seeing what changes need to be made to it for it to 
work.
