[OSM-newbies] Garmin IMG files / mkgmap (was "Conversational gambit: New to OSM?")

I am not sure wether you tried do get a bunch of .img files to your device or if you look for a different solution. I did not follow the whole discussion lately.
I made a script for unix to accomplish and automate this task. That works for half a year now.
It's not difficult, but as always, once you know the solution, it's easy.
I can send it to you if you like. Contact me by PM.
My problem was the following:
I have a Garmin Venture HC, which did not work with gpsbabel or any other tools despite for MapSource.
I wanted to extract exactly the areas of interest for me, to create a tiny map.
I use a VMware-Image to run MapSource in and do not have much space available inside of it.
I do not care for routing, as my Venture does not care for, either.
So I looked for a solution to extract a specific area, make .img-files, create a map product for MapSource and make MapSource send it from inside the VM to my Venture.
This is what I once wrote to another guy with the same problem as me:
I tried to find my way through, but found it was extremely difficult.
Lastly I was successful.
Download IMG-files made of OSM excerpts precompiled by computerteddy,
use mkgmap to combine them,
use a hexdump to find the Product ID, (look for a template to learn which)
patch the registry,
use the map in mapsource,
mark the map with the map-tool,
mark the marked maps in the tabbed list for upload, (yes, you read right)
upload the selected maps to your device.
It's a long chain of things to do.
Most OSMers seem to be successful without mapsource, so there is no-one to support you. Best to use a GPS-receiver with SD-card. No fumbling with mapsource. Great.
Have fun,
Thomas
