I use MapUpload (on Windows) to replace the rest of this:

>use a hexdump to find the Product ID, (look for a template to learn which)
>patch the registry,
>use the map in mapsource,
>mark the map with the map-tool,
>mark the marked maps in the tabbed list for upload, (yes, you read right)
>upload the selected maps to your device.

It's got a couple of quirks:

- It doesn't like pathnames with spaces (not that I blame it :)
- The GUI doesn't always update after selecting files to upload, but they 
are there in the list
- Files can not be read-only
- I found it necessary to change the filename of a file that I change (the 
contents of) in order to get it to upload again.

These can probably be solved - I just haven't had time to get into it.
