There's even greater variation than that.  I-65 in downtown Louisville
has a speed limit of 50 MPH.  Portions of I-10 and I-20 in western
Texas have (daytime) speed limits of 80 MPH.  And there is a section
of motorway_link here in Columbus with a speed limit (yes, an actual
legal speed limit, not just a warning sign with a suggested speed) of
45 MPH.  It wouldn't surprise me if there is an example of a section
of mainline motorway somewhere in the US with a 45 MPH speed limit as
well.
