[OSM-newbies] Any purpose for both an closed way, and a separate node in the centre?

  Yes, this often happens in the US where parks were imported as GNIS nodes. 
It is easy to overlook the node when the entire park outline and features 
are created.   If you notice this, copy the tags from the node to the park 
way before deleting it.   At some point corrections could be given back to 
GNIS for cases where the original node was mis-positioned.
