[OSM-newbies] Fence in middle of street

I've a street with a fence across it, disallowing any access across it. Is 
it sufficient to draw the fence as a way tagged barrier=fence and have it 
intersect the road way at a node? Does the node have to be tagged in some 
way? Or should I break the road way into two dead-end sections that do not 
intersect the fence?

The terse comments on the wiki page are very non-specific and confusing to me.
