Hi Pat, and welcome.

Others have answered your questions ably.  I'm in Girona for State of
the Map and currently across the table from one of your countrymen,
Dermot.  His advice to you is to also join the talk-ie mailing list,
and if you enjoy IRC, #osm-ie (on oftc).  Both are low-traffic, but
excellent to get to know your local mapping colleagues.
