You are right. 
But i think in a Mailinglist/Newsgroup it is not very usefull. 

Many mailinglists have set attachements to disabled.
Every client has its own idea, how to handle these signatures. 
Some are inline, some attached.
After a few replies messages are completly messed up. 

Most messages have not the relevance to be signed off.

I use gpg and cacert more often as usefull, but i think it would be a
good idea to cut off all attachements on OSM mailinglists.
