Hi Ed,
You don't get a cluster of gps points where you stop for a moment?
Consider collecting points at 1/second, rather than using a "smart"
setting like "point every n meters". The smart setting might save
some memory space on the device, but the improved context of the extra
points can be helpful.
josm will color-code your gpx trace by velocity.

I'm not sure if potlatch or P2 have a similar feature.
