[OSM-newbies] Address to Lat/Lon

I am new to OSM & map routing and would like to experiment with gpu based
routing algorithms locally on my computer.  I have downloaded the USA data
from the planet.osm file.  My main question is how do I convert a street
address into a gps coordinate so that I can build my graph for a A*
algorithm to travese.
