Hi Jon Franco,
My advice is quite similar to Richard's.
If I were you I would first think about what you have been taught, and what
you would like to practice as part of your project. Most importantly you
need to be clear what your university expects you to demonstrate as part of
the project.
Once you know what you need to do, and the sort of things you would like to
work on, you could look at which bits of OSM, or OSM related projects would
best be suited to you.
You may already know, but over the last few years OSM has participated as a
mentoring organisation in Google Summer of Code. We will probably apply
this year too if you are interested. Part of the application process is
to develop a project ideas list, which may be helpful for you - last year's
is here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GSoC_Project_Ideas_2011.
There is also a more general research / projects page here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Student_projects.
You will see from this list that we have struggled in the past to find
suitably challenging stand-alone projects relating to the core OSM
infrastructure, so the projects have tended to be on related projects.
The other difficulty has been an apparent reluctance of applicants to work
on an existing project - they have often wanted to start from scratch.
While this is useful from their perspective in starting the overall design
process, it means the project is bound to not develop to a finished product
in the time available. A very useful skill is to be able to pick up work
started by others and develop it, so I would encourage you to think about
that if that would work as far as your final year project requirements are
concerned.
Hope that helps to get you thinking. I would echo Richard's suggestion
of posting to the mailing list rather than an individual - you may get
other people thinking and making suggestions.
Regards
Graham.
