Oh, I read the subject and thought you wanted fund raising ideas.
My answer: a cake bake sale! We all like eating cake and the last OSM
birthday proves some of us can make interesting cakes (even if some were
just unauthorized printing of trademarked logo).
Your ideas on spending money seem good.
I've always wanted something to come of this wiki page
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Weekend_mapping_projects
I finish this year of university in May, and would happily spend up to a
few weeks mapping places before getting a much needed job. This could be
from Canada before I leave, or from the UK when I get home. The need for
financial aid is in travel to the unmapped location (i.e. train fare as
I don't drive but cycle lots) and cheap accommodation for mapping nights.
Perhaps this might fit/evolve into your ideas, it is pretty much the
Mapping Party idea but with the sponsor choosing the location.
Maybe you think I should separately go for doing this?
I've actually thought a bit about doing this for Cornwall and Devon
(which really need some OSM love). I could cycle to each town, drop of a
bag at my accommodation, map for a day, then move on in the morning.
Stopping for an extra day or two at key places to run a mini event to
get locals out mapping and joining the community.
For this it would be helpful to have my accommodation and perhaps one
meal for the nights that I run events, then I might consider the days
in-between a holiday.
When I was thinking about sponsorship sources I thought maybe some
tourist attractions might sponsor me for one or two days. One day could
be spent micro-mapping their site and in return I could also write about
the attraction on my blog. This might have more chance of happening if
there was a main sponsor to start things off. I don't care if me and my
bicycle are covered in respectable advertising, as long as it gets me
down there to map for OSM.
Anyway, I think I digressed. Good job I didn't go into the long detailed
cake plans for OSM's 6th birthday.
