Not all influences are financially.
If a big company "gives" something (Bing)
or takes something (Coast), you can be
 SURE that it serves their interest, and NOT
that of OSM in the first place.
Interests of both parties may be parallel for some time
but will diverge one day or another.
A detailed world map of high quality  (such as osm in 10 years or so) 
is just the kind of asset much too valuable to
ignore for them.

The future will show what those sponsors intended to win....
one at a time.....

Anyway: OSM already ends with an M

I would also oppose this because what you are referring to as "major
donors", are not actually major donors to the project. Even donations
that have got specific mention like, for example, ESRI, are
substantially smaller in value than what a typical top 2'000 mapper has
donated, not to mention the value of what our software devs have
produced or the time our sys admins have provided.

Again: the appropriate way to defuse idle speculation is to simply
provide timely and correct financials.
