Hi,

in order to avoid more speculation. Dermot and myself were attending a
meeting of a working group that consists of people who are dealing with
navigation in the German carmakers. The trip was self financed by Dermot
and myself. We were asked to give an introduction to OSM. As no NDA was
signed there was very little information from the carmakers to us.

We explained the typical stuff: coverage, license and license change,
the typical question of mixing proprietary data with OSM data, the
impact of copyright violations, liability issues, (the lack of)
copyright assignment, the limited possibility to negotiate exceptions in
the license, the limited possibility of the OSMF to provide consultancy
to corporations (and that attending such invitations is hardly possible
and the limit to which the OSMF is currently capable), the differences
to Linux in regards to the trust system with the result that
indemnification is much more difficult to provide.

The people were impressed by the growth of OSM and the quality of in
DACH but are fully aware of the gap to commercial maps (from their
perspective) e.g. limited coverage outside DACH, lack of address data,
missing lane information, missing sign posts, additional effort to
convert the map data into their proprietary format due to the lack of
structural information. They would love to see a roadmap how the gaps
will close over time.

In fact there is no business with the Automotive industry apart from
Bosch (Softec) sponsoring SOTM 2012.

Best regards,
Oliver
