Good evening Simon,
I remember that at a PHP conference a speaker said that the PHP
community is often criticized for long functions names, for lack of the
OOP (object-oriented programming) features, an so on. And he added:
"/Still we must be doing something right/, since it is the most popular
server-side programming language." [1]
Since the OSM popularity also grows [2], /the OSMF still must be doing
something right/. It is clear to everybody.
Norman Davies wrote in /"Europe: A History//" /that the USA became a
superpower in early 40s by the decision to bring women into the economy
on an epic scale. A picture is worth a hundred words; below is the link
to the photo, which I've made at the historic pier 45 in San Francisco:
"Come See What I Built!" [3]
Maybe it is impossible in the case of the OSM. Maybe it will remain a
male hobby project. On the other hand such things as conduct and
discussion guidelines, or a childcare at a conference paid by
participants, etc. are not too complicated . They could be introduced as
a gradual evolution. Besides, others, for example the WMF, are doing
exactly this.
I, personally, learned a lot from this discussion and still reeling from
a disturbing video suggested by Derick [4].
Na dann, einen schönen Abend noch.
With best regards,
Oleksiy
