Uh, well. We don't (aim to) make profits but we're not a charity (in
German "gemeinnütziger Verein") either. [*]

We have the Articles of Association ("Satzung") here:

https://wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association

This makes it clear what our objectives are, and that "The income and
capital of the Foundation shall be applied solely towards the promotion
of the objects of the Foundation; and no part of the income or capital
shall be paid or transferred, directly or indirectly, to the members of
the Foundation, whether by way of dividend or bonus or otherwise in the
form of profit."

If you manage to deduct your membership fee from your taxes based on
that, then I guess it will be because the tax officer doesn't want to
start a discussion over £15 and not because you're right ;)

Bye
Frederik

[*] Becoming a proper charity in the UK, just like in Germany, would
require more stringent reporting, more paperwork (higher accounting
costs), as well as likely some changes to the articles of association. I
am looking into our options but with a looming exit of the UK from the
EU, I'm not sure how much sense it makes to spend time and money to
align the OSMF better with the UK system - we could also move the whole
organisation to a different country in 2019, where requirements would
then be different again...
