Ah, indeed. I only looked at tags on the feature itself, I didn't realize
wikidata tags were being searched as well. That explains it, thank you.

It's supposed to be misspelt Polish (just like "Londn" was supposed to be
misspelt English). I thought that for some reason a misspelt English name
was matched correctly, but a misspelt Polish one was not. Thanks to
Martin's explanation above I now understand that there seems to be no
spellcheck/fuzzy matching done at all.

@Simon - thank you for the suggestion, I will see how it works for my
purposes - though based on a quick assessment it's not helpful in trying to
find places whose original names are in Arabic, but transcribed into Latin
alphabet. That's a big ask though.
