As someone who has been working from home, in mostly virtual companies 
(MySQL, MariaDB) where the majority of staff does so, for the last ~15
years, even we try to meet in person with all staff, or on team level, 
at least once per year.

While remote work works out most of the time (at least in fully remote
environments where you don't have those that can meet at the water 
cooler or coffee machine, and those who don't) it still makes a big 
difference whether you've actually ever met the persons you're dealing 
with or not.
