You were right :) I have done the splitting, following the rules you
suggested. It's not perfect, but considering the split has no direct
external impact, it's good enough I think.

In the end, everything ended up in one subfile or other:

amenities.xml
barriers.xml
buildings.xml
landuse.xml
paths.xml
places.xml
power.xml
roads.xml
shopping.xml
tourism.xml
transport.xml
water.xml

I generally followed the existing comment divisions, although I
grouped a few things like accommodation and entertainment under
tourism.
The only feature left in map_features.xml itself is multipolygon.

I tried to avoid changing any actual features at the time, but
couldn't help merging two different definitions of leisure=track.
