> I did not mean to start a flame war here, nor attempt to say that you're not doing valuable work. Instead, simply point out that the recent alteration is in fact a design regression (at least in my views).
Indeed; my reaction is more based on the past experience. I'll spend, say, a day on design tweaks, and get lots of criticism on technical reasons (it covers more pixels! introduces a new design element!). And yet, these folks never actually contribute to the rails port design, they're just lying in wait for design changes that, given their deep and abiding love for the out-of-date, unfinished design, will invariably seem like a 'regression' or a 'loss of detail' or 'a serious step back'.
As far as which style 'I like better', I think the one I themed out (the graphics are by the uber-talented @aj_ashton) is stronger. Why?
If you want to go technical, the shade of OSM's ocean, the grey, #ccc, and the green, are all approximately the same shade, which makes it hard to differentiate and the self-similar colors aren't all that appealing.
If we're going to go usability-wise, people will flame you to no end about the pan buttons, just as they argued when I removed the pan bar.
If you want to go designy, I like the one on the site right now more. Writing about design is like dancing about music, or something.
