Just a small comment from a usability point of view.

When I visit the browse pages, I'm looking mainly for information
about the objects (editors, comments, nodes etc.) I've always
considered the map as a kind of sugar coating.

With the modified the design the map gets a rather prominent
place while the actual information is pushed down the page. That
means more scrolling to get to the important stuff, especially
on a Netbook screen.

The other thing to consider: the map on the browse pages tends to
take its time to load. That was never a problem with the small map
on the side but might be more obvious with the map in the center.
