@tomhughes Tom, I see your point, but this is not about politeness, rather about the terms used and general approach to the person. I would speak wery differently if I know I am talking to a novice / expert.

Imagine seeing a note: "70km/h here" ... there are number of reactions ranging from

Anonymous of noneditor (0 edits): "Thank you very much for this note. I would like to correct it in the map, but I need more information. Would you please tell me from where to where the speed limit applies, preferably by clicking on the map at these two places and adding note like 'speed limit 70km/h begins here' or by giving me names of crossing streets where the speed limit begins and ends. BTW: did you know that you may edit the map yourself? If you are willing to help us, let me know, I can give you some starting ideas."

Novice (10 edits) - something like above with possibly adding "Could I ask you to add the speed limit yourself? You just want to split the way at points where the speedlimit starts and than add maxspeed=70 tag on the way. If this does not make sense to you, just ask, I am glad to help you."

Expert: "www.openstreetmap.org/way/161940886 of should i split somewhere?"

etc. hopefully you see the point.

@emacsen - I will try to dive into the site code and make a path, but I can not guarantee :)
