Well actually I don't think you have to expose the hash setting as I believe libravatar should always support both. So you just have to add a choice of gravatar or libravatar and I'd be happy to take a patch to add libravatar as an option.

One caveat is that some caching would be needed as I wouldn't want it doing a DNS lookup every time and as things stand the referenced gem does not appear to do any caching.
